Southern California Association of Pediatric Hematology Oncology Nurses (SCAPHON)

SCAPHON is the local chapter of APHON for the Southern California area extending from San Diego to Santa Barbara, and is currently 450 members strong. Because California has many pediatric institutions that are dedicated to serving children and young adults with cancer and blood disorders, our chapter has continued to grow and thrive each year. From its humble beginnings in 1984, when 4 dedicated and passionate pediatric hematology/oncology nurses established the first Southern California chapter through today, SCAPHON’s commitment to educating and supporting pediatric hematology/oncology nurses in Southern California is stronger then ever.

SCAPHON’s Mission

The mission of this chapter is focused on education, evidence based care through science and research, and charity. The chapter provides professional educational programs for those who care for children with cancer and blood disorders, encourages collaboration and communication among pediatric hematology/oncology nurses, and facilitates optimum care and support of the pediatric hematology/ oncology patient and his/her family through education and research.

The SCAPHON Executive Board is made up of 9 positions, each dedicated to a specific area of this organization.  Those positions are: President, Treasurer, Secretary, Conference Planning Chair, Quarterly Planning Chair, Scholarship and Awards Chair, Community Service Chair, Membership Chair, and Fundraising Chair.  The SCAPHON General Board positions are the Newsletter (SCOOP) Editor, Historian, and Website Coordinator.

The SCAPHON Executive and General Board meet the 2nd Tuesday of each month at CHOC Children’s Hospital from 5:30-7:30.  The focus of these meetings are to plan activities, educational programs, quarterly meetings, and the annual regional conference.
